Ab tak humne maana ki ek element (tatva) ke saare atoms bilkul same hote hain. Lekin ye poori tarah sach nahi! Ek hi element ke atoms mein protons toh same hote hain (kyunki wahi element ki pehchaan hai), lekin neutrons alag-alag ho sakte hain.
