Har atom chahta hai ki uske sabse bahri shell (outermost shell) mein 8 electrons ho jaayein (ya hydrogen/helium ke liye 2) — kyunki tab wo sthir (stable) ho jaata hai, bilkul noble gases ki tarah. Isi ko octet rule kehte hain.
Ab dhyan do — metals ke paas bahri shell mein kam electrons hote hain (1, 2 ya 3), aur non-metals ke paas zyada (5, 6, 7). Toh sabse aasaan raasta kya hai? Metal (dhaatu) apne extra electron de de, aur non-metal (adhaatu) unhe le le! Dono khush.

Chlorine (Cl) — atomic number 17, electrons: 2, 8, 7
Bahri shell mein 7 electrons hain. Sirf 1 aur chahiye!
→ Cl wo 1 electron le leta hai → Cl⁻ (ab 2, 8, 8 — stable!)

CaO: Ca (2,8,8,2) 2 electrons deta hai → Ca²⁺, aur O (2,6) 2 leta hai → O²⁻.
Dono ka charge barabar, isliye 1:1 → CaO.
